Tesla: Virtual Reality (VR) Training Simulations

Project type

Software Development

Date

February 2026

Location

Hayward, California

Virtual Reality training offers a transformative way to move beyond traditional instruction into deeply experiential, risk-free learning—especially vital for high-stakes technical and safety-critical work. At Tesla, I was entrusted with designing and developing the company’s very first Virtual Reality Learning Simulation. Wearing both learning designer and software developer hats, and empowered by AI tools, I delivered a functional proof-of-concept in under three months. The simulation immerses Tesla Energy field service technicians in a lifelike virtual environment where they can repeatedly practice critical de-energization procedures, master complex systems, and prepare for the demanding NFPA qualifying exam.
Following a successful stakeholder presentation, the project received full support for expansion. We launched the simulation on Meta Quest and PC, resulting in every trainee achieving a 100% pass rate on the qualifying exam — a significant improvement from the previous 85% success rate. This initiative not only strengthened safety knowledge retention and operational confidence but also opened the door to bringing additional Tesla products and procedures into the virtual world.
